American culture conditioned by electronic media and a celebrity culture based on personalities has given birth to a new kind of author, the amplified bard.”

But one thing the holidays are about besides presents is family. One of the most important members of my family was my grandmother.

My grandmother was the matriarch and she loomed over us like a humid summer in Houston. She was big part in our lives, in my life. Don't get me wrong, she had her faults, plenty of them but she had her good ones too. For example, she showed me how to be man. On Sundays, she would sit in her rocking chair with her parrot, Pancha on her shoulder while watching Mexican boxing. She would tell me things like men, real men speak with confident, deep voices. So, the following poem is for her.

Enjoy your holidays and enjoy the time with your family.

Domingo Boxeo

Abuelita sits in rocking chair
with multicolored parrot on
left shoulder while knitting
a sweater three sizes too small
for a grandson pudgy around
the waist. On the television
two men circle each other in a ring.
Dusty-skinned Hispanic dancing
around,lashing jabs,tentative left hooks,
right crosses that dissolve in midair
or turn into harmless slaps.
This is domingo where abuela
refuses to stay in linoleum kitchen.
Her bones cringing from sunlight
forced into her veins. Her brittle
shoulders with Palmolive soap
stilling the stale scent death
with sweet perfume. Despite all
signs of danger, all threats of disease
her hands remain outstretched,
reaching for cursive shadows of sun.
In this garage apartment
rests center of my family, source of
masculine pride & identity.
When I was 9 with voice soft,
sweet like girl in summer rain
she yelled, Habla como hombre
Or when she picked ticks off
pitbull, making me step on
tiny crawling sacks of blood.
This is Maria Luisa Ortiz,
woman who walked on snow-covered
Chicago streets to garment factories
in warehouse district.
Woman who pulled weeds out of rose bush
gardens with hands chapped,
knotted with cuts, bruises & scars.
But on days like this, watching
boxing on old television screen,
I emerge with laughter: manly,
tough like abuela's hands.

*Be sure to stop on the next stop of the Holiday Blog Tour with Deborah Grace Staleythe amplified bardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03815214621489091683noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15313330.post-30764675882405468942011-12-02T08:52:00.000-08:002011-12-02T09:29:32.603-08:00Holiday Blog Tour 2011 Begins<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIUxNbtSG7jiFXz8i0F6cyJtMm6V-HovsA7OCu7k7nXaZQb4eYS7n-VpKH5NpNhyoOcLltCaJ9fNmzift90QJjO-9967XDpns_ejPHuoB00eQdW047cP3UaquxMwKi4nrBBK0wFA/s400/Holiday+blog.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5681578377057656482" />
I'm very excited to announce that the Holiday Blog Tour 2011 with 23 writers ranging from established to emerging writers has begun.

You can read some up-and-coming, some bestselling and some soon-to-be best selling authors. She talks about technology, poetry and her latest book of poetry, Hard Times Require Furious Dancing and why she chooses to publish some poems directly online through her website.

I love this quote from her talk:

"I decided to write new poetry and put it on the internet first because I wanted to go directly to people.

When you write a poem the feeling is of instantly wanting to share it because you automatically think of poetry, I think, as a medicine. And this is the medicine that comes to you in that moment and you just want somebody else to have it."

the amplified bardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03815214621489091683noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15313330.post-35609757056815987792010-11-16T09:20:00.000-08:002010-11-16T09:43:52.400-08:00Artcrawl @ ESAL + Post-Artcrawl Rooftop Poetry / Music Performance<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEij3CShIy1K0e-CQOSGM7ZpuA7GsKLs8GTHzi6V3CZovwqM2CXaSFkWLF6lEj7TdEvadS4nBaSb9lzqotRx1ju6XCMrr8Uwo8NPug8SAleLTKJ0Q9O1EW2QUZW-6hRvEXBlTsl31g/s320/Artcrawl+2010.jpg" border="0" alt="Artcrawl 2010 Poet Radames Ortiz"id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5540203592607148466" />

November 20, 2010

In conjunction with the 18th Annual Artist's Warehouse ArtCrawl, Elder Street Artist Lofts residents will open their lofts / studios / spaces to visitors for an opportunity to view or buy their artwork and to engage in a dialogue on local art.

There will be guided artist tours of the lofts starting at 12pm and 3pm. The biggest and coolest update is that they have added nearly 400 contemporary poems. Over one hundred of the poems come from Poetry magazine.

Poetry fans can now experience even more contemporary poets including the work of David Bottoms, Martín Espada, Tess Gallagher, Cathy Park Hong, Edwin Torres, Natasha Trethewey and Rachel Wetzsteon.

Other updates regard usability including a "Browse by Poet" search feature. However, according to the Poetry Foundation's press release, "Poetry fans can still maintain a folder of favorite poems; share poems with friends through social media or e-mail; and enjoy an engaging interface designed specifically for the iPhone. As always, the app is free to download and use."

The POETRY app is available in the Apple iTunes Store. I knew it wouldn't be too long before poets began embracing mobile technology to share their poetry with the world. Poem Flow utilizes a great piece of software called TextFlows.

According to their website, "We offer an entirely new way to interact with the written word. We use motion and light to present text as an animated flow on a simple, uncluttered screen. Reading becomes easier, more effective, and fun; writing receives an added dimension of artistic expression."

Currently, the software isn't open to everyone yet but we will be able to create our own flows using their flow composer very soon. In the meantime, you can check out some copyright free flows which include poem flows by Barack Obama, John Berryman, Emily Dickinson and more.

Also, be sure to check out the Poem Flow iphone app and Billy Collin's poem flow below.

the amplified bardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03815214621489091683noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15313330.post-81435334346994676282010-09-03T21:50:00.000-07:002010-09-03T22:22:56.441-07:00Two Poems by Radames Ortiz published in MythiumCheck out a couple of my poems in the new print literary issue of Mythium: The Journal of Contemporary Literature and Cultural Voices.
